ginger... snap!

Last week I bought some items at the grocery store I've never bought or used before.
I have a recipe that strongly suggests using fresh ginger and I can't wait to use it.
But I already forgot what the green thing is called... 
I even tried googling it. 
How am I supposed to use it in a recipe if I don't know what it's called?
Help me out?
